A Windows Update Detached Equalizer APO (most common)

Windows updates, especially feature updates, remove Equalizer APO from your audio devices. The software stays installed; the driver detaches. It worked yesterday, Windows updated overnight, and today it is silent. This is the number-one reason people find Equalizer APO not working out of nowhere.

Equalizer APO Is on the Wrong Device

You ticked “Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)” during install while listening on headphones. The EQ works perfectly — on a device you are not using.

Fix: Sound settings → check which output device is active at the top → rename it to MY HEADPHONES → open the Configurator, tick that device, restart. Tick both headphones and speakers if you switch between them.

The “Install as” Setting Needs SFX/EFX (fixes most “installed but silent” cases)

Equalizer APO can attach at 3 points in the audio chain: LFX/GFX (default), SFX/EFX, and MFX. On some driver stacks the default point never receives audio, so the EQ is installed, running, and processing nothing.

Fix: Open the Configurator, click your device name in the left column (the checkbox stays hidden until you do), tick Troubleshooting options, change Install as from LFX/GFX to SFX/EFX, restart. If SFX/EFX also fails, try MFX, the third option most guides skip.

You Never Restarted After Installing

ASIO (DAWs, some audiophile players) and WASAPI exclusive mode (foobar2000, Tidal, Roon when configured that way) skip the Windows audio pipeline entirely, so they skip Equalizer APO too. The preamp test passes in Spotify but that one app stays untouched.

Fix: Switch the player’s output to shared mode (in foobar2000: Preferences → Output → pick a non-exclusive device). Or accept that this app stays un-EQ’d; there is no workaround inside Equalizer APO.

Your antivirus quarantined a file

Driver installers trip heuristic detection. Some antivirus tools silently quarantine EqualizerAPO.dll or the Editor after install, and Peace then reports “Equalizer APO is not installed” even though you just installed it.

Fix: Open your antivirus quarantine, restore anything from C:\Program Files\EqualizerAPO, add that folder to exclusions, reinstall if files are missing. The installer is clean: our VirusTotal scan of v1.4.2 returned 0/72 detections.

The config file itself is broken
